Alien Woman: The Making of Lt. Ellen Ripley

From Den of Geek: "In the change-of-genre sequel Aliens (1986), James Cameron re-imagined Ripley as a Reagan-era hard-body heroine fighting to redeem her status as a failed mother, and the authors ascribe this state of contrition to the former libertarianism and ungoverned strain of 1970s feminism under Carter, with Ripley replacing a failed model of female strength with a more conservative dynamism in line with ‘morning in America’."

Aliens Book One Paperback

From Comics Bulletin: "Aliens: Book One" takes place right after James "king of the world" Cameron's "Aliens", the second movie from the quadrilogy. It follows the destiny of Newt and Corporal Hicks after their return to Earth. Both get involved in a trip whose purpose is to grab some specimens from the aliens' very homeworld.

Ripley made it safe too but she's nowhere to be found in the book, except for a couple of short references. Of course, those of you who've seen Alien³ know perfectly that Newt and Hicks died and that Ripley didn't reach Earth, at least not right away. If you are bothered by the lack of proper continuity, Dark Horse has released a "remastered" edition, called "Aliens: Outbreak".

In addition to renaming the main characters, it's also in full colour. I haven't seen it, but I would guess you're better off with the original, reviewed here. The black and white art fits the story perfectly and you follow characters you can relate to and whom you're already familiar with. The story is quite different from what you probably expect. The emphasis doesn't lie in hide, seek and trap, like it does in the movies. Instead, we get to discover plenty of behind-the-scene conspiracies that the movies alluded to but didn't really develop. So don't expect to be scared. Click the link above for the full review.

Aliens: DNA War - Paperback

In an inhospitable galaxy, the planet Rosamond 6 seems to have everything needed for human habitation: a moon, an atmosphere, a thriving biosystem. But although it looks like an oasis, it harbors a fatal secret: murderous aliens bent on wiping out every life form in their path.

Anthropologist Jocasta Malvaux is eager to prove her theory that the aliens can be reasoned with, so she sets up an observation post on Rosamond 6. Amazingly, when the monsters become aware of Malvaux and her expedition, they don't attack.

What's the reason behind the aliens' seeming lack of interest in the humans? Are they evolving? Or are they simply lying in wait?

Expanding on Ridley Scott's classic film, "Aliens: DNA War" continues the chilling saga of the intrepid men and women who fight to stay alive against an opponent that sleeps, breathes, and breeds with just one goal: to kill.

The Alien Quartet: A Bloomsbury Movie Guide

This book details many different aspects of the Alien films: the different directors, the making of the films, the themes, the actors, the tensions on the set-indeed, everything anyone could possibly want to know about them. Written by the great film critic, David Thompson, the book is also a passionate, quirky, and very funny as well as informative.

About the Author: David Thompson, born and educated in London, now lives in San Francisco. He writes regularly for both the U.S. edition of Esquire and the Independent on Sunday in London. He is also known for his biographies--Showman: The Life of David O. Selnick and Rosebud: The Story of Orson Wells--for three remarkable 'fictions' that are derived from the screen--Suspects, Silver Light and Warren Beatty and Desert Eyes--and for A Biographical Dictionary of Film, which is now in its third edition.

His most recent book is Beneath Mulholland, a collection of essays, and he is also the author of 4-2 (from Bloomsbury), a memoir on growing up as a soccer fan, based on the 1966 World Cup final.
