A very strange, very jarring soundtrack album release that starts out with a selection of '60s pop hits and transitions through "The Marines Hymn" to Fairlight performances by Abigail Mead (actually Vivian Kubrick, daughter of director Stanley Kubrick).
The original part of the album is dark and sometimes unmusical, but works better than might be expected, even in the context of the film. The album generated a European Top Ten hit with "Full Metal Jacket (I Wanna Be Your Drill Instructor)," performed by Kubrick and Nigel Goulding. ~ Steven McDonald
A superb ensemble cast falls in for action in Stanley Kubrick's brilliant saga about the Vietnam War and the dehumanizing process that turns people into trained killers. Joker (Matthew Modine), Animal Mother (Adam Baldwin), Gomer (Vincent D'Onofrio), Eightball (Dorian Harewood), Cowboy (Arliss Howard) and more -- all are plunged into a boot-camp hell pitbulled by a leatherlung D.I. (Lee Ermey) who views the would-be devil dogs as grunts, maggots or something less.
Lee, I want it real, Kubrick told Ermey at the outset of filming. I wouldn't give it to you any other way, the ex-Marine sergeant responded. The action is savage, the story unsparing, the dialogue spiked with scathing humor. Full Metal Jacket, from its rigors of basic training to its nightmare of combat in Hue City, scores a cinematic direct hit.
From the Publisher: Despite the infamous reputation of the enigmatic Stanley Kubrick, Matthew Modine couldn't refuse his offer.
Faced with the prospects of a career-defining role and mentorship by a cinematic great, the 24-year-old Hollywood actor arrived in London armed with a medium-format Roleiflex -- inspired by Kubrick's early career as a Look photographer -- and a notebook to record his own on-set reportage, preparation for his starring role as a Marine Corps journalist.
But expectations eroded as a strange, creeping sickness pervaded the set, a horrific accident sidelined a principal, and an unexpected rivalry arose with a co-star. As the months dragged on, take-by-take, Modine realized he was falling victim to a manipulative mind-game of the Grand Master himself.
By the time his tour of duty ended a year and a half later, Modine had shot hundreds of photos and written countless entries. Only now -- after two decades and the death of Kubrick -- can Modine look back on his images and words. The result -- a coming-of-age drama set against the backdrop of Kubrick's Vietnam saga. Combining Modine's stunning photos and poignant, handwritten diaries with remembrances and stories from his perspective today, Full Metal Jacket Diary offers an unparalleled glimpse at a closed-off world fashioned by a brilliant director.
