BRIEF HIGHLIGHTS ON OTHER HAUNTED MOVIES - 1999 TO PRESENT

The Blair Witch Project - 1999

The film opens with introductory text: "In October of 1994, three student filmmakers disappeared in the woods near Burkittsville, Maryland while shooting a documentary. A year later their footage was found." In the footage, Heather Donahue, Michael C. Williams and Joshua Leonard set out to produce a documentary about the fabled Blair Witch. They travel to Burkittsville, Maryland, formerly Blair, and interview locals about the legend of the Blair Witch.

The locals tell them of Rustin Parr, a hermit who kidnapped seven children in the 1940s and brought them to his house in the woods where he tortured and murdered them. Parr brought the children into his house's basement in pairs, forcing the first child to face the corner and listen to their companion's screams as he murdered the second child. Parr would then murder the first child. Eventually turning himself in to the police, Parr later pleaded insanity.

Another night, they hear Josh screaming in the darkness but are not able to find him. The seventh morning, Heather finds a bundle of sticks and fabric outside their tent. Later inspection reveals it contains blood-soaked scraps of Josh's shirt, as well as teeth and hair, but she does not mention this to Mike. That night, Heather films herself apologizing to the co-producers of her project as well as their families and breaks down crying and hyperventilates, understanding that something terrible is hunting her and Mike.

Later, they again hear Josh's agonized cries for help, and discover a derelict, abandoned house in the woods. Mike races upstairs, following what sounds like Josh's voice, while Heather tries to follow. Mike then claims he hears Josh in the basement. He runs downstairs and after what seems to be a quick struggle, goes silent and drops the camera. Heather enters the basement screaming in fear while her camera catches a glimpse of Mike facing the corner. Heather and her camera violently drop to the floor and the footage ends.

Session 9 - 2001

The Danvers State Hospital has been closed since 1985. Gordon Fleming (Peter Mullan), the owner of a small asbestos removal company, is in a desperate financial bind and makes a bid to remove the decrepit hospital's asbestos. He is also a new father, and the stress of work and parenthood have been causing problems between him and his wife, Wendy. Gordon's team is both small and eclectic. Mike (Stephen Gevedon) is a law school dropout, who is educated on the asylum's history.

Phil (David Caruso) is filled with bitterness after losing his long-time girlfriend to Hank (Josh Lucas), another team member who can't resist taunting Phil over the issue. Because of this, Phil has taken up smoking marijuana. Jeff, Gordon's nephew (Brendan Sexton III), is the youngest member, and suffers from severe nyctophobia. As work begins inside the hospital, Mike discovers a box marked "Evidence" in a tunnel. Inside he finds a collection of nine taped sessions with former patient named Mary Hobbes.

Phil finds Gordon in one of the patient rooms, staring in horror at photos of Gordon's family hanging on the wall. Later on, as the new employee replacing Hank pulls up to the asylum, Gordon is seen standing in one of the main rooms, and soon finds Hank. Phil appears and tells him to wake up and to "take a really good look at him." Gordon removes Hank's sunglasses to see the handle of the orbitoclast protruding from Hank's eye.

It is revealed that Gordon murdered his wife, daughter and dog after a pot of boiling water spilled and Gordon then proceeded to murder all of his colleagues in succession, Gordon turned on Phil and killed him. Gordon then proceeds to murder the new employee with the orbitoclast after he comes into the room. Gordon, talking into his broken cell phone, starts crying and apologizing to his wife. Finally, the doctor's voice on the recording asks: "And where do you live, Simon?" to which "Simon" replies, "I live in the weak and the wounded, Doc."

Below - 2002

The USS Tiger Shark is a submarine on patrol in the Atlantic Ocean during August 1943. The submarine is ordered to pick up survivors spotted adrift by a British PBY Catalina patrol plane. At the wreck site, they retrieve three survivors´┐Ża British nurse and two others, one wounded´┐Żfrom a British hospital ship that was torpedoed several days earlier. As they pick up the survivors the Tiger Shark spots a German warship bearing down on them. The submarine has several encounters with the German warship and suffers damage from depth charges in the process.

Later the commanding officer of the Tiger Shark, Lieutenant Brice (Bruce Greenwood), discovers that the wounded survivor is actually a German POW, Bernard Schillings (Jonathan Hartman). Brice confronts him because he thinks Schillings has been making strange noises to betray their position to the German warship. Brice believes it was an act of sabotage, and shoots Schillings dead when the German panics and grabs a scalpel to defend himself.

The crew experiences eerie phenomena seemingly related to the recent death of the previous captain, Lieutenant Commander Winters. According to Brice, Winters was killed trying to obtain a souvenir from a torpedoed German ship; he fell and hit his head while reaching for his souvenir, then drowned before he could be rescued.NDisembodied voices are heard, a series of mechanical problems keeps the submarine turning back towards the site of the sunken German ship, and crewmen are accidentally killed at an alarming rate.

They begin to suspect a supernatural influence. Brice's version of how and why Captain Winters died is brought into question. It is revealed that Brice and two other officers were responsible for the death of Captain Winters, and that the British hospital ship was mistaken for a German ship and was sunk by the Tiger Shark. The three officers could not afford this blot on their records and conspired to suppress the story, killing Captain Winters as he tried to save the wounded in the ocean to make up for his and his crew's drastic mistake.

This is discovered after one of the officers is mysteriously killed while working in the ballast tank of the sub, and the other is impaled on an outside railing after trying to escape the boat underwater after seeing Winters' ghost. The boat is ultimately crippled by the mounting accidents, and only five crew members remain alive: Brice, Odell, Paige, Stumbo, and "Weird" Wally.

Brice and Paige face each other down on the surface deck of the disabled submarine. Paige has spotted another ship in the area and tries to get its attention, but Brice holds her at gunpoint. His remorse over the accident overcomes him, and he shoots himself in the head, falling dead into the ocean. The four survivors are picked up by the ship spotted by Paige, which turns out to be British. The Tiger Shark sinks away from the surface, coming to rest on the ocean floor next to the British hospital ship.

The Orphanage - 2007

In 1975 Spain, a young girl named Laura is given up for adoption. Years later, adult Laura returns to the closed orphanage, accompanied by her husband, Carlos, and their seven-year-old adopted son, Sim´┐Żn. She plans to reopen the orphanage as a facility for disabled children. Sim´┐Żn claims to see a boy named Tom´┐Żs. He befriends Tom´┐Żs and draws pictures of him as a child wearing a sack mask. Social worker Benigna Escobeda informs Laura that Sim´┐Żn's adoption file indicates that Sim´┐Żn is HIV positive.

Incensed at Benigna's intrusion, Laura asks her to leave. She later finds Benigna in the orphanage's coal shed, but Benigna flees the scene. Later, Sim´┐Żn teaches Laura a game which grants its winner a wish. Clues lead the two to Sim´┐Żn's adoption file. Sim´┐Żn becomes angry, and says that his new friend told him that Laura is not his biological mother and that he is going to die soon. During a party at the orphanage, Laura and Sim´┐Żn argue, and Sim´┐Żn hides from her.

They were killed by Benigna, who stored their remains in the orphanage's coal shed. Unable to cope with the situation, Carlos leaves the orphanage. Laura recreates the original orphanage layout and attempts to contact the children's spirits by playing a version of Peek Behind the Curtain. The spirits lead her to the door of a hidden underground room. Inside is Sim´┐Żn's corpse, wearing Tom´┐Żs's mask. While searching for Sim´┐Żn the night he disappeared, Laura moved pieces of construction scaffolding, blocking the entrance to the secret room.

The crashes that night were caused by Sim´┐Żn trying to get out. He fell and broke his neck. Laura takes an overdose of sleeping pills. Dying, she begs to be with Sim´┐Żn again and the children's spirits appear, with Sim´┐Żn among them. Sim´┐Żn tells Laura that his wish was for her to stay and take care of the orphans. Sometime later, Carlos visits a memorial to Laura, Sim´┐Żn and the orphans. Carlos returns to the orphans' old bedroom and finds a medallion that he had given to Laura. He turns to look as the door opens, and he smiles.

Lake Mungo - 2008

Sixteen year old Alice Palmer drowns while swimming with her family at a dam in Ararat, Australia. After she dies strange things start to happen around her house. It's discovered that her teen brother Matthew was actually setting up the "sightings" of his dead sister to give the family reason to exhume Alice's body and give his mother closure. One of the hoax video tapes of Alice showed that the neighbor was in Alice's bedroom looking for something, her mother found a sex tape of the neighbor, his wife and Alice hidden in the fireplace in Alice's room.

The double appears bloated just as Alice's body had been after being recovered from the lake in the beginning of the film. Alice's family then goes home and moves out of their house, feeling that Alice had simply wanted them to know who she really was and what she had seen. The ending of the film adds some ambiguity to whether this was truly accomplished, as the film's mid-credit scenes reveal that Alice had manifested in earlier pictures and videos, with nobody noticing.

The Woman in Black - 2012

In an Edwardian-era English village, Crythin Gifford, three little girls are having a tea party with their dolls in an attic. They are smiling and having fun when they suddenly look at something in the corner. Then they stand up and walk trance-like to a window and jump to their deaths with blank faces. Some years later, in London, widowed lawyer Arthur Kipps (Daniel Radcliffe) is instructed to visit Crythin Gifford to arrange the sale of "Eel Marsh House" and examine the papers left by its deceased owner Alice Drablow.

His legal contact Mr Jerome tries to hurry him away, but wealthy local landowner Samuel Daily (Ciar´┐Żn Hinds) and his wife Elisabeth (Janet McTeer) allow him to stay at their home. Though most of the townsfolk treat him coldly, he finds companionship in the local tavern hand, Mrs Fisher, who still grieves the loss of her daughters. During his initial visit to Eel Marsh House, Arthur is distracted by odd noises, and subsequently, the appearance of a spectral entity in funerary garb.

To lift the curse, Arthur and Sam find Nathaniel still in the carriage on the marsh, and place the boy's body in his room. Arthur lures Jennet to the body. Arthur and Sam bury Nathaniel with Jennet. Assuming everything has finished, the next night Arthur joins with his son Joseph at the train station. While bidding farewell to Sam and waiting for the train to London, Arthur sees the Woman in Black on the other side of the platform while Joseph walks entranced on the tracks towards an oncoming train.

Arthur leaps onto the tracks to save Joseph, while Sam sees the Woman and the dead children's faces in the train windows. After the train passes, Arthur opens his eyes to darkness in the now deserted station. He looks around as Joseph asks "Who's that lady?". Arthur's late wife waits farther down the tracks, implying that Arthur and Joseph were killed by the train. The family vanishes into the fog together while the Woman in Black looks on and then turns to face the audience.
