Jack finally comes to and sees a swarm of huge insects emerging from the shadows. He ignites a flare and throws it at them, causing the insects to scatter. Jack comforts Jimmy over the loss of Hayes. Lumpy is also grieving over Choy. Carl wakes up and sees his camera is destroyed, all the film exposed.
When the flares burns out, the large insects return, and in greater numbers, including huge pink leeches with large fangs. Each man is fighting off the bugs, but they are overwhelmed. Lumpy is surrounded by the leeches and is eventually consumed by them.
Jimmy grabs a machine gun and blasts off the insects attack Jack. Now out of ammo, another swarm of large insect close in on them. Suddenly we hear a wave of gunfire. Englehorn, Baxter, and others come to their rescue.
Kong returns to his domain, passing by a Triceratops getting a drink from the river. We see the skeletons of other large apes that died long ago, implying he might be the last of his kind.
He reaches his perch looking over the ocean. Ann tries to entertain him with her routine, but he's not in the mood. She gives up and notices he is staring out at the ocean. Kong and Darrow watch the sun set from the top of the mountain.
Darrow: It's beautiful.
She taps her chest to convey how the beauty of it has touched her. He holds out his palm, inviting Ann to sit it in it, which she does.
The men have climbed up out of the gorge, it was Baxter who insisted on a rescue mission. Englehorn glares at Carl . . .
Englehorn: That's the thing about cockroaches. No matter how many times you flushed them down the toilet, they always crawl back up the bowl.
Denham: Hey buddy, I'm out of the bowl. I'm drying off my wings and trekking across the lid.
They notice Driscoll has climbed up the other side of the gorge, he intends to save Ann. Englehorn tries to convince him to give up, Ann is dead. But Carl insists she's not dead, he's cooking up another one his ideas.
If Jack saves Ann, the ape will be hot on his heels. Carl wants Englehorn to use his Chloroform to trap the ape. The captain wants no part of it, but Carl challenges him by playing with Englehorn's ego, since he's considered the best at live animal capture.
When the ape falls asleep, Driscoll finds them and coaxes Ann to slip away. At that moment, Kong's eyes open. Furious, he thrashes at Jack. However, a swarm of huge bats enter the ruckus. With the ape now distracted by the attacking bats, they escape down a vine hanging over the cliff.
But Kong pulls the vine back up. Jack grabs the wing of a bat and it flies towards the river. Once low enough, they drop into the water and head back to the ruins. Upset that the woman escaped, a furious Kong pursues them back to the ruins to try to get her back. They reach the village, but the bridge is not lowered.
Preston pleads to Carl to lower the bridge, but he's trying to time everything right, risking their lives. They have set a trap to capture Kong. Preston has seen enough and releases the bridge himself. Jack and Ann make it across just as Kong comes leaping over the gorge and trying to crash through the gate.
Inside, Ann notices the Chloroform and sees the men are setting a trap. Kong crashes through the gate and several men lasso rope and hooks around him. They force the ape down while Englehorn throws a bottle of Chloroform, releasing the gas near Kong's face. Using boulders as counterweights, they throw a large net around Kong.
Weakened by the gas, Kong sees Jack heading off with Ann. This gives him a second wind and easily tosses off the men. The men race to their boats, with Kong hot on their tail. Darrow begs them to stop and to let the great ape be. When Kong gets near she pleads with him to 'just go back' but he doesn't. He continues to try to get her back.
Englehorn shoots a whaling spear into the ape's leg. Just as Kong reaches the edge of the sea, Carl throws one more bottle, which is enough to finally knock the ape unconscious.
Kong is now captured and taken back to New York.
