In Minas Tirith, Aragorn is crowned King of the West, heralding the new age of peace, and marries Arwen.

The hobbits return to the Shire, where Sam marries Rosie Cotton.
Frodo, having finished writing his entry in the Red Book of Westmarch, is still suffering from the effects of the wounds he received from the Ringwraiths at Weathertop and from Shelob.
Realizing that he will never have peace in Middle Earth, he decides to go with Gandalf, Bilbo, Elrond, and Galadriel to the Grey Havens and sail to Valinor, the Undying Lands.
Before embarking at the havens, Frodo passes the Red Book to Sam to record the years of his life to come.
Frodo a look of wonderment crosses his face . . . as he steps forward and accepts Gandalf's invitation . . . finally released from his pain, care falls from his face . . . he is the young Frodo we first met so long ago.
Sam, Merry and Pippin comfort each other as the white ship glides away from the dock, pulling slowly away from the shore and passing along the Straight Road into the Uttermost West.
The white boat sails away towards the headlands, disappearing into the golden light of the setting sun. Sam in growing darkness, still follows the departing ship with his eyes, Merry and Pippin are already preparing to leave.
Bagshot Row, it's morning and Sam walks up the path towards his house. A little girl toddles up to greet him. He hugs his daughter. We hear narration from Frodo with a message to Sam that he has much to enjoy and his part in journey goes on.
Rosie, cradling a tiny baby boy, steps up and kisses Sam on the cheek. Sam with his family . . . he draws a deep breath, "Well, I'm back." Sam looks at his lovely family with great happiness, tinged with a little sadness.
Sam and Rosie along with the children, enter Bagshot . . . the bright yellow doorway closes behind them. He goes inside and shuts the door as the screen fades to black.
